Set in the heart of Stockbridge where Edinburgh's artists, writers and musicians gather, is Broughton, a modern secondary school with extensive playing fields. Serving six primary schools on the north-west side of the City, Broughton is a true comprehensive school to which young people of different backgrounds, interests and abilities are equally welcome and important.

The City of Edinburgh Music School students, numbering between 30 and 40, play a vital part in the life of Broughton whose total school roll is approximately one thousand. Broughton celebrated its centenary in 1999. Broughton was and has an impressive history, one of the first non fee-paying schools in Edinburgh. It boasts famous former students such as writer Hugh MacDiarmid, international jazz saxophonist Tommy Smith and lead singer of the rock group Garbage, Shirley Manson.

The present building opened in 1972. Facilities include bright classrooms, well equipped science laboratories, computer suites, extensive art, technical, business studies and home economics areas, a library and resource centre, a theatre, dance studio, gymnasium and sports hall. The specialist music department is housed in the same building as the theatre and includes four large classrooms, 16 studios for teaching and practice and a newly-refurbished electronic music studio.

The drama department and Broughton Youth Theatre produce plays and shows every year displaying the fine acting, script-writing, producing and directing talents in our young people. Art exhibitions throughout the City are a testimony to exceptional creative teaching enabling students to gain entrance to the most prestigious art colleges in the land. Information technology is a major development in education this century and Broughton leads the way in Scotland. Broughton has networked PCs or Apple Macintosh computers operating in every department. An in school E Mail system, a broadband link to the Internet and a VC8000 video conferencing system have all been installed at Broughton as a result of this successful enterprise.

The individual attention the music students receive is further enhanced by Broughton's guidance system. The chief aim of this scheme is to provide support and advice on personal, social, vocational, health and curricular concerns empowering students to develop into well-adjusted and healthy adults. Broughton is divided into three houses, named after famous Edinburgh dignitaries - Adam, Scott and Napier. Each house is directed by a Deputy Head Teacher who is assisted by several guidance staff and group tutors. All houses have a social area and guidance offices. One of the biggest house events of the year is the Inter-House Music Competition which is judged by a celebrity.

Regular communication to parents is through termly newsletters, reports and parent-teacher meetings. Parents are encouraged to contact the school by telephone or email to arrange meetings over any concerns. We also produce a school handbook containing more detailed information on course choices, extra-curricular activities and general school organisation which is available on request from the School Office.
